Operophtera fagata (Scharfenberg, 1805)

Northern Winter Moth
Cheimatobie du htre

Wingspan: 27-33mm

A univoltine species flying from October to December when it is a visitor to light. Recorded from the mv lights at Las Descargues and traps in or on the margins of the birch woodland of the plateau. Separated from brumata by its slightly larger size, paler colouration, silky, tapering wings and white hindwings.

The larva feeds predominantly on betula species but can be found on almost any broadleaved trees. Overwinters as an egg on the foodplant before feeding in the spring and early summer before pupating underground.
