Xylena exsoleta (Linnaeus, 1758)

le Bois-Sec

Wingspan: 49-62mm

A univoltine species on the wing from August to April when it is an infrequent visitor to light and an occasional autumnal visitor to sugar. Recorded each year at Las Descargues but more commonly taken in the spring. The specimen taken here on the 8 March 2010 was on a night when the temperature dropped to -9C. A species of moorland and open woodland.

The larva is polyphagous on various herbaceous plants, feeding in spring. Overwinters as an adult, mates in the spring, before pupating in detritus on the ground.
