Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus, 1758)

Wax Moth

Wingspan: 30-41mm

A bivoltine species with two overlapping generations on the wing from March to the end of September. It is a visitor to light but is never a common species. It has been recorded from all sites but is most commonly observed in upland habitats.

Larvae feed on honeycomb in hives before hibernating in silken cocoons. Pupation takes place in the spring often with many cocoons grouped together.
