Zygaena transalpina (Esper, 1780)

Wingspan: 29-35mm

A univoltine species with an occasional second generation in favourable years, on the wing from June to August (September). The specimens illustrated were all photographed in mid-September and are variants of the usual form. In parts of France it is a coastal species but inland prefers open, chalk and limestone habitats.

Larva feeds on Lotus spp. and Coronilla spp., Hippocrepis comosa, H. glauca etc. Pupates in a creamy, yellow cocoon on the stems of tall grasses.
