Hemaris tityus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth
Le Sphinx bourdon

Wingspan: 38-44mm

A bivoltine species on the wing in May and June and again in August. An occasional visitor to Las Descargues but more often encountered at lower altitudes in the Lot. A species of unimproved pasture, heathland and calcareous meadows.

Larva feeds on Galium, Scabiosa, Lonicera, Lychnis, Knautia arvensis etc. Overwinters as a pupa in a flimsy cocoon in plant detritus on or just below ground.
