Mormo maura (Linnaeus, 1758)

Old Lady
La Maure

Wingspan: 62-74mm

A univoltine species on the wing from June to late September when it is a rare visitor to light but more often encountered at sap runs, sugar or on wine ropes. At Las Descargues it is found most commonly in the birch woodland rides and scrub although away from this altitude it is more common in wetlands.

Larvae feed on various herbaceous plants in late summer whilst in spring woody plants, birch, hawthorn and even ivy are favoured. Overwinters as a larva before pupating in a cocoon secreted behind bark, in dense vegetation or just below ground level in loose soil.
