Cossus cossus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Goat Moth

Wingspan: male 60-75mm female 75-96mm

A univoltine pest species on the wing from May to July when it is a frequent visitor to light and occasionally sugar, it has been recorded from woodland sites particularly those near rivers or streams.

Larvae feed on various broadleaved trees where they bore into the trunk and remain feeding in the larval state for up to four years. Pupation takes place in the larval gallery or in soil at the foot of the food source.
