Melitaea diamina (Lang, 1789)

False Heath Fritillary
La Damier noir

Wingspan: 34-44mm

A univoltine to bivoltine species on the wing from May to August. The species favours damp, floristically-rich meadows, woodland margins and rides up to 2200m.

Larvae feed on Valeriana officinalis, V. dioica, V. repens, Plantago lanceolata, Filipendula ulmaria, Melampyrum nemorosum, Veronica spp. etc. Pupation takes place on the foodplant close to the ground.
