Hipparchia fagi (Scopoli, 1763)

Woodland Grayling
Le Sylvandre

Wingspan: 64-80mm

A univoltine species with an extended appearance, flying from June to the end of September when it is an occasional visitor to the woods of the plateau and a frequent butterfly on the Causse. A species, as the name would suggest, of woodlands and dry scrubby grasslands.

Larvae feed on various grass species with pupation taking place in a cocoon underground.
