Smerinthus ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Eyed Hawkmoth
Sphinx demi-paon

Wingspan: male 65-75mm female 70-85mm

A bivoltine species on the wing from April to July and again in August and September when it is an occasional visitor to light and has been recorded from all sites. A species of many habitats preferring those where woodland is dominant.

Larvae feed on various trees and shrubs, Salix, Populus, Betula, Corylus, Malus etc. Overwinters in the pupal state underground and adjacent to the foodplant.
