Laothoe populi (Linnaeus, 1758)

Poplar Hawkmoth
Sphinx du peuplier

Wingspan: male 60-75mm female 65-85mm

A bivoltine species flying from May to July and again in August and September with occasional individuals straying over into October in favourable years. A common species recorded from all sites , more commonly taken in poplar plantations and birch woodland.

Larvae feed on Populus, Betula, Malus, Fraxinus etc. Overwinters underground as pupae.
