Acherontia atropos (Linnaeus, 1758)

Death's Head Hawkmoth

Wingspan: male 90-120mm female 110-120mm

A migrant species recorded from May to October but unable to survive the winter in Europe. It is an occasional visitor to light and has been recorded only from Las Descargues.

Larvae feed on members of the Solanaceae, the potato, henbane, belladonna, tobacco, cannabis, spindle tree and olive. Pupation takes place underground in a flimsy cocoon.
