Retinia resinella (Linnaeus, 1758)

Pine Resin-gall Moth

Wingspan: 15-22mm

A univoltine species flying from June to the end of July. The adult is yet to be recorded at Las Descargues but galls have been found on a solitary specimen of Pinus sylvestris in the garden. Usual habitat is conifer plantations, several of which occur on the plateau.

Meyrick, 1927 describes the gall as a chamber of resin on the bark of Pinus sylvestris where the larva resides for up to two years. Recent literature by Sterling & Parsons, 2012, describe a resinous gall formed on the twigs of Scots Pine, Lodgepole Pine and Monterey Pine.
