Haplotinea insectella (Fabricius, 1794)

Wingspan: 11-20mm

A univoltine species on the wing from June to the end of August. Yet to be recorded at light and the only specimen taken at Las Descargues was collected by Dave Shenton from the kitchen. A species of houses, barns, stables and outbuildings and also recorded from rotten wood and fungus on tree trunks. A difficult moth to photograph, it either played dead or ran faster than Usain Bolt.

Larvae feed on stored vegetables, grain and fungus on trees or rotten wood.
