Wingspan: male 85-110mm female 75-115mm

A bivoltine species flying from April to early September when it is a frequent visitor to light but does not feed. It has been recorded at all sites and if conditions are suitable can appear in numbers. A species of various calcareous habitats, woodland, scrub, meadows and fen.

Larvae feed on cultivated and wild privet, ash and various woody perennials and herbaceous plants. Overwinters as pupae, often twice in a cocoon deep underground.
