Hyles euphorbiae (Linnaeus, 1758)

Spurge Hawkmoth
Sphinx de l'euphorbe

Wingspan: male 55-75mm female 65-80mm

A bivoltine species flying from May to July and again from August to October when it is a frequent visitor to light and has been recorded from all sites. A grassland species recorded from upland and the limestone pavement of the Causse.

Larvae feed on spurges Epilobium cyparissias, E. peplus, E. wulfeni, E. nicaeensis, annual mercury etc. and the adult gathers nectar from various wild and garden plants.
