Deilephila porcellus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Small Elephant Hawkmoth
Petit sphinx de la vigne

Wingspan: male 40-50mm female 42-55mm

A bivoltine species on the wing from May to September with no discernible break. It is an occasional visitor to light and has been recorded from all grassland sites in upland and lowland areas. A species preferring open grassy sites with short grassy sward.

Larvae feed on bedstraws but also many other herbaceous species before overwintering as pupae in a thin cocoon in plant debris or just below the soil surface beneath the foodplant.
