Wingspan: 25-38mm

Imago: bivoltine - March to June and again July to September. Occasionally diurnal in sunshine but is also a frequent visitor to light. P. fuliginosa borealis Staudinger occurs here and is almost as common as the normal morph. Recorded from all sites and habitats.

Larvae: feed on various herbaceous plants and woody perennials. Overwinters as a late-instar larva.
