Arctia caja (Linnaeus, 1758)

Garden Tiger
Ecaille martre

Wingspan: male 45-65mm female 55-75mm

A univoltine species flying from July to August. Annual abundance fluctuates enormously with this species, some years it is common and in other years very few are recorded at all. Both sexes visit light and it is recorded from all habitats and sites. Extreme variation is possible, an example of which I include, taken by me at Poltesco in Cornwall.

Larva is polyphagous on herbaceous plants before overwintering as small a larva with pupation taking place in early spring.
