Biston strataria (Hufnagel, 1767)

Wingspan: 51-56mm

A univoltine species on the wing from February to April. The female rarely visits light but the male is frequently recorded throughout the early spring. A species of broadleaved woodland and unmanaged grassland. The specimens shown depict fine examples of crypsis and variation to be found in the species.

The larva feeds on oak, hazel and aspen at Las Descargues before overwintering as a pupa.
