Selenia tetralunaria (Hufnagel, 1767)

Purple Thorn
L'Ennomos illustre

Wingspan: 37-48mm

Imago: A bivoltine species flying from April to May and again from June to August when it is a frequent visitor to light and has been recorded from all sites.

Larva: Feeds on hazel, birch, oak and hawthorn, overwinters as a pupa just below ground level.
