Cydia splendana (Hübner, 1799)

Wingspan: 14-22mm

A highly variable univoltine species flying from mid-May to early September when it is attracted to light. Recorded from Las Descargues and the broadleaved woodland of the ridge and gorge where its foodplant is found. A beautiful chestnut coloured specimen was taken in mid-August 2011.

The larva feeds on the seeds of Quercus spp., Castanea vesca and rarely Juglans regia. The fully grown larva drops with the seed to the ground where it pupates either under or on the soil surface.
