Ochlodes venata (Bremer & Grey, 1853)

Large Skipper
La Sylvaine

Wingspan: 28-35mm

A univoltine species flying from the end of May to September. A common butterfly at Las Descargues and the surrounding countryside. A species of open, sunny meadows and woodland margins with Rubus and bracken present.

The larva feeds on various grass species before hibernating as an almost fully grown larva with pupation taking place in the spring.
