Lithosia quadra (Linnaeus, 1758)

Four-spotted Footman
La Lithosie quadrille

Wingspan: male - 37-45mm female - 41-54mm

A univoltine species with an extended season, flying from the end of May to the end of September. It is attracted to light, often in high numbers in early and late summer. A species of mature woodland but it is a strong flyer and both males and females can be found almost anywhere. 2008 was an exceptional year for this species with some nights producing hundreds of individuals of both sexes at Las Descargues.

Larvae are lichen feeders, but do not feed on the rare Peligera canina as long thought and stated in many volumes.
